History of CVCC Hosting the Coon Creek Rendezvous/Expanding Primitive Camping Areas

The CVCC was approached by the Coon Valley Business Association asking if the Club would consider becoming the host site for the Coon Creek Rendezvous.   The rendezvous had been held at the Coon Valley Veterans Memorial Park for the previous 10 years.  CVCC members voted to accept this request and the 2017 Coon Creek Rendezvous was held the last weekend of June.  The rendezvous was held in 2018 on the same weekend.

Due to heavy rains the week before these first 2 rendezvous and limited camping areas out of the wet areas Club members approved expanding the primitive camp area known at the “Scout Camp” to other adjoining areas up out of the wet areas.  The rendezvous committee and other Club members began clearing brush and small trees in these adjoining areas and created many additional primitive camp sites.  Improvements were made to the access road to these primitive camp areas.

A wood shed was built at the “Scout Camp” area from materials donated by Club members and was filled with dry split firewood by the scouts and Club members.  These new primitive camp areas became accessible to Club members and guests during all camping seasons with dry firewood as well.

A very successful 2019 Rendezvous was held utilizing the new camp sites.  2020 saw the covid virus shut down public events and the rendezvous was canceled.  The rendezvous returned in 2021.  Prior to the event donated materials allowed an additional wood shed to be built and additional camp sites were created.  Many regulars as well as several new rendezvous campers made this another successful event.  The 2022 Rendezvous very again well attended and several new participants.

Because of the increased demand by members for use of the Clubhouse during June and to avoid the summer storms the rendezvous was moved to the third weekend of October in 2023.  Prior to the event a third woodshed was built again with materials donated by an area business. The event was very successful and attracted many new participants from out of the area.  At the end of the rendezvous a request was made from the rendezvous participants that we consider having Spring rendezvous.  CVCC members approved this request.  The first Spring Coon Creek Rendezvous was held the third weekend of April 2024 and included the first “School Day” with over 120 third and fourth grade students visiting camps and demonstrations of pre 1840 skills.  The rendezvous will continue with the October event and School Day.

The Coon Creek Rendezvous continues to be strong both financially and through participants as a continuing Club event.  Although due to the aging out of and retirement of many long term rendezvous people and lack of younger people joining in the tradition of primitive camping and events remains strong.   This will remain true with the continued support of clubs like the CVCC  (to quote one of our new campers “The best rendezvous site in the State!”)   Club members are encouraged to utilize these areas and the access road for other activities year round.
