The 2012 Spring CVCC Muzzleloader Weekend began with preparations of the clubgrounds on Tuesday. Bruce King spent most of the day splitting and piling firewood from the large maple parts in the parking area. Scott Hobson, Dan Thompson and Royce Curtis took care of mowing the clubhouse area and shooting ranges. The muzzleloader shed was emptied and moved into place by Scott and Royce – Thanks to Badgerland Pheasant Farm for donating all the silo blocks! The Kubota was used to push the remaining maple off the parking lot and the shooting ranges were set up with many targets for practice. Scott, Gary Gade and Tim Sample set up the shotgun area with the trap machine on loan from Badgerland and also the sporting clays area. Campers started arriving on Wed. and Thur. Jerry Bordson brought some fresh lake Michigan salmon that was grilled by Matt Steckel for a grand feast on Thur. night. Matt then smoked the remaining salmon for Friday’s wine and cheese party. The crew hit the Stockyards for Friday fish. Biskets and gravy were prepared for breakfast on Sat., then burgers on the grill by Paul Lewison and a potluck after the rifle competition. Shooters had the opportunity to shoot muzzleloaders on the Big Bore range, rimfires on the .22 range, pistols on the pistol range, plus trap and sporting clays on the shotgun area. Several took advantage of the shotgun set ups with both modern and muzzleloading shotguns. The rifle competition on Sat. had 16 shooters competiting for the top prizes. Winner of first place was Stan Richason. The shoot ended with a special tribute to departed member Jim Carnitz. Jim’s request was that his funeral coffin be used as a backstop for the jug shoot (Check out the group picture in the photo gallery!) All shooters had 2 shots at a bullseye to see who could come closest to the center. The "jug" was won by George and a toast to Jim was shared in the clubhouse after the shoot. Jim’s coffin was donated to the Western Wisconsin Wild Bunch cowboy action group for use in their western town at the Holmen Rod and Gun Club. Thanks to Bill Marquardt for arranging this.
